Floral Pavilion, New Brighton

Fata Morgana stars in Theatreland

Just one demonstration of the superior aesthetic qualities of Thorn’s Fata Morgana pendant convinced architect Ken Martin that it was exactly right to illuminate the new Floral Pavilion in the Wirral coastal resort of New Brighton. Just one demonstration of the superior aesthetic qualities of Thorn’s Fata Morgana pendant convinced architect Ken Martin that it was exactly right to illuminate the new Floral Pavilion in the Wirral coastal resort of New Brighton. Late last year, Thorn project sales engineer Anid Mackay invited Liverpool-based architect, Ken Martin, to a nearby installation to see the product in situ. He was impressed – and specified the luminaire for the newly restored theatre and conference centre.

The direct / indirect lighting, which is used within the 800-seat theatre auditorium and huge multi-purpose panoramic lounge area, is pleasantly subdued creating a warm social environment. All are connected to a SensaLink digital lighting control system, as are the other lights, so that the effect they produce can be "tailored” to specific needs, as well as being energy proficient.

Half of these 1000mm diameter fittings, each with four 42W compact fluorescent lamps, also provide emergency lighting. All are installed in such a way that each fitting can be lowered and raised remotely, for maintenance.

General lighting is from Thorn downlights, while suspended Planor and Jupiter II T5 fluorescents are used in a variety of office settings.

Outside, the façade is brilliantly lighted by E/fact ground uplights and wall-mounted Danube bulkheads.

The theatre’s refurbishment represents phase one of a £60million regeneration project, which aims to revitalise the historic resort’s tourism sector for the 21st century.

Developers are Neptune Development; consulting engineers TACE of Cheadle; main contractors Kier North West; electrical contractors Mitie Engineering; and client Wirral Council.
