Westpac Place

Communication and colour for bank HQ

Thorn illuminates 53 floors of themed office areas of one of the most modern corporate headquarters in Australia, Westpac Place, the Australian banking headquarters. The recently opened Westpac Place in Sydney is one of the most modern corporate headquarters in Australia – not least in its main lighting which is by Thorn.

More than 8,500 DALI controlled recessed modular fluorescents, employing T5 lamps and high performance louvres, illuminate the 53 floors of themed office areas, providing a refreshing environment for the Westpac Banking Corporation’s 5,000 employees.

The scheme was planned by Vessi Ivanova, Senior Electrical Engineer at Webb Australia, who enlisted Thorn’s help to develop a custom luminaire that would meet the quality expectations of one of Australia’s largest financial institutions.

She knew exactly what she wanted – high quality control of the light distribution to ensure good viewing conditions, together with an attractive appearance and economical operation. In addition the fittings had to be cost effective and suitable for installation at 2.7m22 spacings.

She asked Thorn to perform CAD simulations of several alternative optics and as a result chose Alanod MIR05 high purity aluminium material for the louvres. It was not simply the material and aesthetic appeal of the luminaire which prompted the choice. The advent of T5 lamps and DALI controls had given the opportunity of formulating a new lighting package which not only gave more light (an LOR of 0.77) but also improved it’s distribution.

Vessi Ivanova was honoured with an Award of Excellence and Award of Commendation as part of the Illuminating Engineers Society (New South Wales Region) Awards for Westpac Place.

The building architect was Johnson, Pilton, Walker, and for tenancy fitout, the interior design architects were Geyer Design and Hassall. Electrical consultants were Webb Australia and installation was undertaken by Stowe Australia. Photographer: Tyrone Branigan.
