Perth-Bunbury Highway, Australia

Thorn has completed what is believed to be the biggest highway lighting scheme ever undertaken in West Australian (WA) history. The new Perth-Bunbury Highway, opened by WA Premier Colin Barnett on 20th September, will bring the State’s South-West Region significantly closer to metropolitan Perth, to the benefit of daily commuters and tourists.

It covers 71 km of dual carriageway and 32km of adjacent shared paths for pedestrians and cyclists. The scheme involved the supply of over 700 Alpha 2000 and 320 Civic 1 (vandal resistant version) luminaries - for the highways and pathways respectively.

The lanterns were chosen because of their high performance and optical efficiency, which enabled greater spacings to be achieved and therefore less columns and luminaires installed, saving material, energy and labour costs. As well as performance, the use of quality materials was of prime importance: the lanterns had to withstand tough meteorological conditions.
