Westpac Place the new corporate headquarters for Westpac Banking Corporation, one of Australia’s largest financial institutions, was designed to embody the dynamic diversities of a “City”. Its two towers totaling 53 floors of themed office areas provide a refreshing environment for its 5,000 employees. The base building architectural firm was Johnson, Pilton, Walker, and for tenancy fit out, the interior design architects were Geyer Design and Hassall in collaboration. Webb Australia undertook the engineering of the base building and tenancy fit-out of electrical, communications and lighting. Stowe Australia was awarded the contract for the electrical work.

Vessi Ivanova, Senior Electrical Engineer at Webb Australia, enlisted the help of the Thorn Project Team to develop a luminaire for the main office areas that would meet the quality expectations for such a prestige landmark. Over 8,500 DALI Controlled luminaries would be required. Including feature lighting, Westpac Plaza would be the largest DALI installation in the world.

The criteria for the typical office luminaire was for the fitting to achieve a balance between functionality and aesthetics, be cost effective and energy efficient. It had to be installed at 2.7M x2.7M spacing and achieve a high level of illumination with low glare and high uniformity. Various CAD developed Optics and materials were trialed before the final luminaire was submitted for NATA Testing. The optics utilised Alanod MIR05 high purity aluminum reflector material to achieve the performance and luminance control required.

“Working closely with Thorn, we developed an outstanding luminaire with a high efficiency of 76.8% whist maintaining complying values for average luminance and uniformity. The optics were a credit to Thorn’s technical ability” commented Vessi. Lighting Designer, Vessi Ivanova, was recently awarded an Award of Excellence and Award of Commendation as part of the IES NSW Awards for Westpac Place. Thorn Lighting was among the manufacturers Vessi put forward as part of this award.
