Staff in the Milan office of this international law firm are benefiting from people-friendly lighting, thanks to Thorn’s innovative IQ Wave luminaire.

The challenge

Legal practice Osborne Clarke wanted to improve the quality of light in its Milan office, which is located just around the corner from the city’s Palace of Justice. In the past, the office was lit by conventional lighting, but today the owners decided to bring in an LED solution.

The lighting solution

Thorn Lighting worked with lighting designer Marco Pollice of Pollice Illuminazione and architect Paola Serboli, to come up with a new solution for Osborne Clarke. Thorn’s IQ Wave luminaire was chosen for its high quality of light, with direct and indirect elements, and its ability to be mounted into the acoustic panels suspended from the ceilings at Osborne Clarke’s offices.

Designed by Thorn’s expert optical team, IQ Wave uses cutting-edge optics for advanced glare control. This means a homogeneous lit appearance with no LED hot spots and minimal light loss, ensuring maximum employee comfort.

IQ Wave features Thorn’s unique MV-Tech light optic. The ‘M’ represents the shape of the light, emitted upwards from the central optic , and bouncing back down and through the diffuser to create great task lighting. The ‘V’ represents the light which has been widely dispersed outwards from the centre to create a soft lit appearance.

The result

The installation at Osborne Clarke was completed in the summer of 2018. The direct/indirect light distribution of the IQ Wave fittings creates uniform lighting for a comfortable, communicative working environment. IQ Wave is designed not only to light desks, but also to provide light for face-to-face communication and ensure that the working environment generally is pleasant to be in and easy to navigate.

IQ Wave is a highly efficient and long-lasting option. The luminaire has a lifetime of 50 000 hours to L90 – meaning that even after 50 000 hours of operation, it will still retain 90% of its original light output.

Delivering light levels of approximately 500 lux, good illumination of the office space is balanced with visual comfort and indirect light. The luminaires are controlled using a KNX system, allowing control of light to be integrated with other services. The demand to build architectures of dynamic light, able to maintain syncronized our inside biological rhythms with those of the universe, has necessarily brought Marco Pollice to look for solutions of high quality, with advanced technologies fittings and highly performing. From here, the choice to use the innovative technology IQ Wave luminaire by Thorn to enlight Osborne Clarke law offices.

It is from the years '80, infact, that Marco Pollice, on the wake of the studies in the subject light brought ahead by his ancestors, plans considering the effects of the light on the health of human beings and on the environment that entertains them. Studies today confirmed by the new scientific discoveries around the Circadian Rhythm.

These has lead his lighting research in 7 specific areas of intervention, where every place and people, have the correct and specific illumination to feel well and healthy.

Thorn Giovanbattista Dazzi said: “I’ve used IQ Wave a number of times because of its excellent quality/price ratio. The light this product creates for offices is pleasant and comfortable. The client has received an excellent solution and is very satisfied.”
